Ray Kurzweil, legendary inventor and author of New York Times bestsellers The Singularity Is Near and How to Create a Mind, has created inventions and ideas that have changed human civilization. PBS called him “One of the revolutionaries who made America”, and Inc. magazine named him “Edison’s rightful heir.”

Now Kurzweil has created a novel, and an unforgettable character —Danielle — to help convey some of his most important ideas. Danielle, Chronicles of a Superheroine, tells the story of a precocious young girl who uses her intelligence and accelerating technology to solve humanity's grandest challenges. Now if only we can find more courageous visionaries like Danielle.

Written as an alternative history, Danielle’s journey as a driven young girl brings her face to face with many important figures from recent history and our modern world. Told through the eyes of Danielle’s equally remarkable sister Claire, a girl adopted from Haiti after surviving the earthquake, this story shows all readers a hopeful vision of humanity’s future—and how to achieve it.

The novel features 24 graphic novel style illustrations, one for each year of Danielle’s life, by New Yorker cartoonist and Ray’s daughter, Amy Kurzweil (author of Flying Couch a graphic memoir, a New York Times Editor's Pick and Best of 2016).

Accompanying the novel are two nonfiction companion books by the author which is a literary first. How You Can Be a Danielle is a call to action, providing pragmatic, thought-provoking and clear guidance on how readers can be inspired to emulate Danielle and help bring about a better world. A Chronicle of Ideas A Guide for Superheroines (and Superheroes) provides Kurzweil’s – and Danielle’s – unique spin on 282 concepts presented in the novel.

Danielle Chronicles of a Superheroine Complete Edition edition by Ray Kurzweil Children eBooks Reviews

  • Scribed by a great inventor, Danielle is a tour-de-force of literary inventions.

She is also a character for the ages, edifying and incandescent for all ages, introducing readers to novel ideas, novelistic somersaults, singular technologies, scientific prophecies, and political pinatas bursting on nearly every page.

Popping up in unexpected places, you will encounter Bin Laden, Obama, n-dimensional string theory membranes, the Dalai Lama, nanobots, Chairman "Zhao", hidden quantum variables, and Ronald Reagan (for sensitive folk, don't worry, he's still cryogenic). There is even a Chairgirl of China for your delectation! Pics available.

What would you expect from Ray Kurzweil, who twists and turns the prose, poetry, music, and plot back and forth through time and space, like the inventive master of literary and scientific time travel that he is? And what do we expect of his dazzling daughter and New Yorker cartoonist Amy, who drew the spectacular illustrations and is the apparent model for Danielle?

In communications theory, the measure of information is entropy, or surprising bits. After following the futuristic "Life Bits" cameras deep into the lives and technologies of the characters, Kurzweil supplies an encyclopedic "book 2" on "How You Can Be a Danielle." You too can solve the world's problems with high entropy ideas. Here Ray gets serious, with a valuable trove of web resources for the use of students and seniors alike.

But Kurzweil is really a follower of the Peter Drucker mantra "Don't solve problems."

When you solve problems, you feed your failures, starve your strengths, and achieve costly mediocrity. Many of the usual "problems" of the current political order are mercifully absent in these picaresque pages. The rule of unique inventors such as Kurzweil is to "pursue opportunities," changing the entire environment for the better, leaving the problems behind for rumination by bovine problem crunchers through multiple stomachs of bureaucracy.

The real rule is to launch entirely new things, such as this book, which combines a rousing plot and a shrewd curriculum for young and old, ready to be reeducated by a true American genius.
  • A plunge into a great mind that reveals its ideas to us to become people of the singularity, capable of advancing at the exponential speed of the transformation that we are living and producing these days
  • The novel, Danielle Chronicles of a Superheroine, is a must read for young adults or for any reader who wants to change the world for the better. I got the book for my daughter who is a real-life "Danielle." The book comes exquisitely packaged as if it is a special gift from the author Dr. Ray Kurzweil himself. The packaging reminds me of cross between a suitcase or passport that has traveled the world yet also like a laptop adorned with stickers. The book storage case reminds me of a reference book for a library and I hope it will become a reference book for the next generation. Although the definition of a superheroine is a female fictional hero having extraordinary or superhuman powers, it can apply inspire boys to be heroes too.

The story Danielle rewrites history through Danielle's retrospective journey through past historical events analogous to the title character of the film Forest Gump. The juxtaposition of a fictional character woven into nonfictional events creates a fascinating series of teaching moments using an alternative reality to inspire the imagination. The book is colorfully illustrated by Amy Kurzweil, the author's daughter, who is an accomplished illustrator for New Yorker magazine. Her simplistic and colorful cartoons depict Danielle whose identity can be taken on by the reader.

The novel is unique in that is comes with a pair of companion books “How You Can Be A Danielle” conjoined with the novel and A “Chronicle of Ideas A Guide for Superheroines (and Superheroes).” The workbook can be an actionable diary of sorts so that readers can take down notes for real-life actions.

This book is perfect for my daughter who is a voracious reader and prolific writer and illustrator. As an 8th grader, her art class electives were filled so she landed in a STEM class. The STEM concepts are relevant to the subject matter explored in the book. This book should be required reading in classrooms across America and the world if we want the next generation to solve the world's problems.

As the author Seth Godin has said, "ideas that spread win." So, if we want the ideas offered in this novel to change the world, we need to spread them!

We can all be a Danielle. I am a Daniel(le)!
  • I’m an educator and bought this hoping for some inspiration and insight from my favorite futurist on how to prepare the next generation to solve some pretty serious problems. Instead I got the most extreme Betty Sue character in existence. Think of Wesley Crusher x 1000 set in this age.

I’m not sure I’m able to grasp what’s happening here. I gave up on it when the family dropped everything to travel to Africa when the 6 year old single handily won $200,000 grant from the WHO. Thankful for Audibles refund policy.
  • Danielle Chronicles of a Superheroine is an excellent learning opportunity and source of inspiration to young girls. It is that empowering voice and "lead by example" presence girls need to ensure they grow up knowing they can do anything they want, be anything they want to be, and make big differences in the world.
  • My teen loves this book! It’s fun, worldly and empowering. I haven’t seen her phone left behind in awhile so that’s the best indicator of all.
