The Adventures of the Princess and Mr Whiffle The Thing Beneath the Bed Patrick Rothfuss Nate Taylor 9781596063136 Books Reviews

  • Like Pat Rothfuss's Kingkiller Chronicles, this little gem has much more to it than first meets the eye. It appears to be a simple story, where the illustrations offer at least as much as the text. But it's also an exercise in the way a writer (and illustrator) can give you all the clues, while still fooling the eye like a street magician. It's a lesson in the job of a reader to notice details, and read carefully.

And, unlike the lengthy trilogy, all of this in about 750 words.

My teenager loves this, and wants to share it with all her friends. She is not sure which will be more fun, the appreciation from those who will understand the genius here, or the consternation of those who don't. Maybe because she could be distantly related to its heroine. Or WS Gilbert's Katishah, who's "just a wee bit bloodthirsty."
  • As the book proudly states, this is not a book for children.

What it fails to mention is that neither is it a book for teens, adults, or anything in between. I honestly would never have bought this book if it didn't have Patrick Rothfuss' name on it, and now I have intense buyers remorse at shelling out $35 for what reads like something written on a dare. It is neither appropriate for children nor engaging for adults.

    ---SPOILERS---

Also, the 'twist' ending would be more of an acceptable twist if it was foreshadowed at all. The only hints you get are the mildly grisly fates of some of the Princess' stuffed animals, but nothing to suggest her carnivorous reveal.
  • Patrick Rothfuss knows how to write a fun and deep kids book. It is dark and thus some kids love the details and hidden meanings while others cry. This is a book that requires several readings to catch everything in the word play and pictures. Great coffee table book too.
  • I love Patrick Rothfuss's writing. This is definitely a different voice from King Killer Chronicle but matches his personality and wit perfectly. I have seen other's say that this is a book about children, but not for children. I don't see that. I think the "monster under the bed" aspects are great and when i was a kid we were allowed to enjoy a little bit of scary or gory. I think most kids would have fun with this book, but i don't have children so read it first and decide for yourself. The illustration is superb and perfectly matched to the cute and not-so-cute aspects of this story.
  • Our whole family LOVES this book. Beautiful illustrations and deliciously dark and twisty story
  • I didn't know exactly what to expect out of this book. I'd read the synopsis, read Pat's blogs concerning it, was looking forward to it, but still didn't have a concrete idea of what it would be exactly. That said, I'm SO happy I purchased it. Not only is it a fun read, it's got some serious bite. This is a coffee table book for me. I'm a single adult, with single adult friends, and not only is this something that we all will enjoy, but we'll reference it to each other over the years as a shared awesome experience.

The Princess and Mr Wiffle may not be for everyone, but it's definitely for me.
  • Ok, don't read this to your kids, not the young ones anyway. It is a fun one, and you get to
choose your ending, you have three choices. Depending on how sick your sense of humor is, its
your choice, so this will fit anyone's taste. The illustrations are wonderfully done by Nate
    Taylor.
  • Love it!
